Sunny Side Up: Distancing from SF

The main Opposition Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) has distanced itself from a recent statement made by party Chairman Field Marshal MP Sarath Fonseka calling on the public to take to the streets on 9 August to oust President Ranil Wickremesinghe and his Government.

Fonseka first made the statement in Parliament on 27 July and reiterated it once again, calling on the protesters not to leave until they have achieved their target. However, members of the Aragalaya movement who have carried out the protests had dismissed Fonseka’s statement and criticised the MP for making such a statement.

Several members of the SJB, including the party’s General Secretary, MP Madduma Bandara, have meanwhile distanced themselves from Fonseka’s statement, saying the comments made by Fonseka were his personal opinion and not that of the party.
