The Nelum Pokuna Theatre, which is claimed to have been constructed according to former President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s concept, was not his (Rajapaksa’s) concept, Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) MP Vijitha Herath claimed last week.
Herath explained that the Nelum Pokuna Theatre project was mooted by him when he served as the Minister of Culture in the then President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga Government in 2004.
Addressing a meeting of the National People’s Power (NPP), Herath further noted that he had discussed with the Chinese about funding for the project and that the design of the Nelum Pokuna structure was his (Herath’s) idea.
According to him, the Chinese had proposed a different design for the structure and he had proposed the design of the lotus flower for it instead.
Herath further noted that the foundation stone for the theatre was placed by former President Kumaratunga after the JVP defected from the Government in 2005 and that former President Rajapaksa had later declared open the theatre in his name.Sunny Side Up: Nelum Pokuna not MR’s concept: Vijitha
