Sunny Side Up: No cabinet ranking

The expectation of newly appointed Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) Governor Ajith Nivard Cabraal being appointed as a governor with cabinet ranking did not materialise.

Despite many rumours of Cabraal receiving the Governor post with cabinet ranking, Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) General Secretary MP Sagara Kariyawasam said there was no possibility of appointing Cabraal as the CBSL Governor with a cabinet rank.

Kariyawasam explained that a cabinet rank was allocated only to ministers.

However, after assuming duties as the CBSL Governor, Cabraal had justified his request to elevate the post of Central Bank Governor to the rank of a cabinet minister.

“There is nothing wrong in giving that kind of recognition. The cabinet ranking is not only for me. I will finish this and go, but others to follow will have that recognition,” Cabraal had told an English newspaper.

According to Cabraal, the role of CBSL Governor was more demanding than that of a cabinet minister who may have to oversee just an area of a particular portfolio.

Cabraal had further pointed out that Singapore has a central bank governor of cabinet ranking.
