Russian President Vladimir Putin had recently referred to Russia’s relations with Sri Lanka while noting the recent progress in ties.The Russian President had reportedly expressed these views when Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to Russia Prof. Janitha A. Liyanage had presented their credentials to the President, along with 19 other ambassadors from other countries.Referring to Sri Lanka, Putin had said: “Next year, we will mark the 65th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations with Sri Lanka. Good contacts have been established between foreign ministries, defence ministries, and ministries of the economic bloc, as well as between parliaments. By the way, Secretary of Russia’s Security Council Nikolai Patrushev has just visited Colombo, on 22 November.”Putin had further noted that since 2009, Sri Lanka had been involved in the work of the Shanghai Co-operation Organisation as a dialogue partner, contributing to the efforts to ensure the security of the Eurasian region, and its sustainable socio-economic growth.
