The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine seems to have reached the sunny shores of Sri Lanka in an unexpected manner.
Sri Lanka has become a top leisure destination among Russian and Ukrainian travellers and there seem to be growing tensions between the Russian and Ukrainian tourists currently in the island following the conflict in their homelands.
Several protests carried out by Ukrainian tourists in Sri Lanka including outside the Russian Embassy in Colombo saw the protestors calling on the Sri Lankan Government to not permit Russian tourists into the country. However, Russian tourists continue to visit the island, recording the highest number of tourists to arrive in the country until last month.
Most Russian and Ukrainian tourists are currently in beach areas and there have been instances where minor flare-ups have taken place between these groups.
