The governing Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) last week gave the impression that United National Party (UNP) Leader, MP Ranil Wickremesinghe was supportive of the Government and was prepared to assist it.
Agriculture Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage said in Parliament last Tuesday (8) that Wickremesinghe was on “our side” and that he too was a “boss” in the governing party.
Wickremesinghe had previously met the President and senior Government members and noted the need to seek assistance from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
Aluthgamage’s comments came as the political rumour mill made the rounds that the UNP was planning on joining the governing party to form a national government to address the economic crisis faced by the country.
However, Wickremesinghe last week dismissed the rumours, stating that the UNP did not have any plans to form a national government with the governing party, but pushed for an all-party meeting to formulate a joint plan to over the current crisis.Sunny Side Up: RW on our side: Mahindananda
