The Embassy of Switzerland in Colombo has taken up home gardening by converting the mission’s front lawn into a cultivation patch. The cultivation drive was carried out by the staff at the mission. The produce from the vegetable patch is to be distributed among the poor, according to the Mission Head.“Entire Swiss Embassy lawn transformed into a vegetable garden by the staff with great support of renowned Swiss company @A_Baur_Co. In times of suffering and on our National Day we want to set an example and show solidarity, and will donate our garden produce to some of the poorest,” Swiss Ambassador Dominik Furgler tweeted last week, along with photographs of the Embassy staff engaged in cultivation work on the front lawn. The Government has already called on public as well as private sector institutions to promote home gardening to address the impending food crisis. Public sector employees were also granted a holiday on Fridays for several months to encourage them to engage in cultivation activities.
