The recent decision to reopen liquor stores saw a growing public debate on the merits and demerits of the move. While some governing party members criticised the move, many other members defended and even commended the move. One of the main arguments put forward by several governing party members was that the decision to reopen liquor stores was aimed at preventing people from consuming illicit brews like moonshine (kasippu). This argument was presented by Minister S.M. Chandrasena as well as several other governing party MPs including S.B. Dissanayake. They claimed that people were not deterred from consuming alcohol by the closure of wine stories but were encouraged to drink more kasippu.
