A suspect has been arrested in connection with the incident of assaulting a person traveling in a van in Hanwella with sharp weapons.
He was arrested with heroin in his possession in the Athurugiriya area.
The suspect has been arrested by the Western Province Southern Crimes Division, the Police Media Unit said.
The arrested suspect is a 35 year old resident of Pitipana, Homagama.
The suspect is a follower of Samarappulige Chaminda Buddhika alias Chami, a member of an organized crime gang currently based in Dubai, police said.
Investigations have revealed that Chami had demanded a ransom from the occupant of the van and that his followers had committed the crime because the ransom was not paid.
The arrested suspect is to be produced before the Kaduwela Magistrate's Court today (09).
