Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokeswoman Joanne Ou has alleged that China has a part to play in terms of the ongoing economic crisis in Sri Lanka.
Ou said that the unprecedented crisis since Sri Lanka’s independence in 1948 underscores the consequences of China’s “Belt and Road” initiative-incurred debt trap.
The Belt and Road Initiative is a global infrastructure development strategy adopted by the Chinese government in 2013 to invest in nearly 70 countries and international organisations.
Meanwhile, the Ministry noted that the 60 Taiwanese expatriates in Sri Lanka are safe and added that it will keep in contact with Taiwanese citizens and that individuals can reach the ministry or its representative office in Thailand’s Chiang Mai for assistance.
Taiwan imposed the highest travel advisory level, red, for Sri Lanka in April, warning against any visit to the country.
