Tamil diaspora wants SL in Criminal Court

04 Oct 2022

BY Mirudhula Thambiah   The British Tamil Forum (BTF), commenting on the final resolution by the Core Group of Countries on Sri Lanka at the 51st United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) session, noted that the issues relating to Sri Lanka should be referred to international criminal justice mechanisms.  BTF General Secretary V. Ravi Kumar, speaking to The Morning, noted that his organisation endorses supporting the victim community’s grievances and aspirations to take tangible actions by referring this matter to international criminal justice mechanisms, such as the International Criminal Court (ICC) or the International Court of Justice (ICJ).  He noted that the BTF endorses a special ad-hoc international tribunal and the application of universal jurisdiction principles by the Member States for accountability, travel bans and the freezing of assets. “The BTF also emphasises the establishment of a meaningful political power-sharing arrangement for lasting peace, stability, and prosperity in Sri Lanka,” he noted.  The UNHRC resolution by the Core Group of Countries will be taken up for voting on 6 October.  The resolution tabled on 28 September is currently co-sponsored by Albania, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, the Marshall Islands, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Slovakia, Sweden, Turkey, the UK, Northern Ireland, and the US.
