Taxes on the poor have gone up since commodity and transport taxes have been increased by the incumbent government, Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Eran Wickramaratne said.
He said the taxes on the rich have come down since income tax has come down.
“Income tax has come down by 32 per cent and Import Duties by 19 per cent. However, special commodity levies have gone up 10 per cent,” he said during the debate on the Appropriation Bill in Parliament.
He further said, “We do not approve this. The fiscal revenue has dropped to 10 percent of the GDP. In 2018, this exceeded 13 per cent. The poor are under pressure. The government has a responsibility. The rich needs to be taxed so that the poor can live. Taxes are there to maintain equity in the system.”
He also said that it was unusual to present an Appropriation Bill at the end of the year.
