Teachers’ union urges short, quality syllabi

16 Sep 2022

BY Dinitha Rathnayake    The Ceylon Teachers’ Service Union (CTSU) urged the Government to introduce short and qualitative syllabi for schools. Speaking to The Morning, CTSU General Secretary Mahinda Jayasinghe said that they are unsatisfied with the current education system, where the students have no objective at the moment. “Sri Lanka’s education sector as a whole has entered a very serious and complex situation and it has become more difficult to manage the situation. The Government has no proper policy to educate the next generation. All the past and present Education Ministers only had a political view, which has done no good for the country. Students have been badly affected due to the rising prices of food, accommodation, and transport, as well as the rising prices of stationery and other educational materials, and their situation is compounded by frequent power cuts. The online education system is not successful, and only 35% of students participated in the sessions from 2020 onwards,” he said. According to Jayasinghe, the Government does not obtain any views from the trade unions for policy-related changes, exacerbating such issues. The education sector was already in poor condition prior to the current economic crisis, due to the Covid-19 pandemic. During the height of the pandemic, approximately 4.3 million Sri Lankan students were among the worst affected, with prolonged and repeated school closures. The latest concern facing both teachers and students alike is that the surge in petrol and diesel prices has made transportation to and from school unaffordable.
