The future of education is the internet: Dullas

18 Feb 2022

The future of education is the Internet and the Government has already taken all possible steps to equip all schools in the country with internet facilities as well as the necessary tools, said Minister of Mass Media and Information Dullas Alahapperuma. He made this statement during a computer donation drive held in Jaffna today (18), adding that all should work together to eliminate educational inequality in the country. "25% of primary school teachers in Sri Lanka are untrained in modern technology. In the Northern Province alone there are 53% primary untrained teachers. We do not need more examples to understand this discrepancy. When I was the Minister of Education, I looked into education in the Northern Province. It was then that I came to know that there are only 22 National Schools in the Northern Province. The number of national schools in the Northern Province will increase to 76 with the President's program to convert 1,000 schools into national schools," said Minister Alahapperuma. He further added that there were 10142 schools in Sri Lanka and the aim of the government is to provide internet and technical facilities to every school. "In the future, education will depend on the Internet, so it is the primary responsibility of the government to develop the necessary infrastructure together," he said. During his visit to the Delft Saivapragasa College in Jaffna, Alahapperuma donated laptops and other accessories. The school has 16 teachers and 68 students who are computer literate. Deputy Chairman of Parliament, Co-Chairman of the Coordinating Committee, Jaffna District MP Angajan Ramanathan, Jaffna District Secretary Maheshan, Additional District Secretary S.K. Pradeepan, Director General of Government Information Mohan Samaranayake, Principal of Saivapragasa College Agilan Deshwari and a number of Government officials were present at the special occasion.
