It has been a long, and in many ways bizarre season, but it has all come to an end with Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City lifting the Premier League Trophy for the fifth time.

Their city rivals Manchester United came second-best but there was clear gap between the two sides in table and on the pitch.

Chelsea and Liverpool secured the remaining two spots in the Champions League, while Leicester City and West Ham United secured spot in the Europa League.

Spurs who came in seventh will play in the first ever Europa Conference League.

The sufferers of relegation

The three relegated sides were determined four weeks before the season came to a close. Sheffield United was the first. The Blades promised so much in the 2019/20 season where they secured ninth place in the table but this time had one of the worst seasons ever in the history of top flight football in England. They suffered 29 defeats while winning only seven games.

West Bromwich Albion followed shortly afterwards after they suffered 22 defeats in the season while securing only five wins. They were last relegated after the 2017/18 season yet they came back to the top league last year after securing the second automatic promotion spot in the Championship. However, they struggled through the season and, apart from few surprise performances, the Baggies were never up for the challenge.

Fulham was the last team to be relegated after a close fight between themselves, Burnley, and Brighton. Last season, Scott Parker’s side won the play-off final in the championship to earn their spot in the Premier League after a year of absence. Fulham would look back at the season and wonder if they could have edged over a few out of their 13 drawn games that could have potentially given them a better chance at safety.

The promoted teams

Looking at the promoted side, Norwich City and Watford secured the two automatic promotions spots from the Championship. Norwich were crowned 2020-21 Sky Bet Championship title. The title capped off a remarkable season for Daniel Farke’s team as they bounce back to the Premier League at the first time of asking, following last year’s relegation.

Watford secured the second automatic promotion to the Premier League for the 2021/22 season after a one-year absence. Xisco Munoz’s side made sure a first-time return to the top flight after been relegated in 2019/20.

It is the first time since 2009/10 that two relegated sides have sealed automatic promotion the following season. The 2021/22 campaign will be Watford’s eighth in the competition since they were first promoted in 1999/2000. Their 11th-placed finish in 2018/19 remains their highest in the competition to date.

Last Saturday’s (22 May) Championship play-off final saw Brentford emerge victorious over Swansea, booking their place at the top table of English football.

It is the first time Brentford have ever made it to the Premier League since its inception and the first time they’ve reached the top flight in any form since 1947. The Bees also becomes the 50th club to compete in the competition since its inception in 1992-93.
