The young violinist Sohalee

By Kusumanjalee Thilakarathna

Sohalee Thuhansa Adhikari is a six-year-old from President’s Girls College, Nawala. She is aspiring to become a musician and loves to play the violin. She also likes to practise singing and dancing and dreams of learning to play the melodica too.

Sohalee, can you tell us more about yourself?

My full name is Sohalee Thuhansa Adhikari and I am only six years old. I am a student at President’s Girls College in Nawala. I live in Himbutana with my parents and grandparents. My favourite subject is Sinhala. I love to play music, sing, draw, and read storybooks. I love to go to school and play with my friends.

Can you tell us about the books you read?

I love to read storybooks. The most recent story I read was from the life of Lord Buddha. It was about Rahula Podi Hamuduruwo.

What did you learn by reading that book?

Prince Rahula was the son of Prince Siddhartha and Princess Yashodhara. When Prince Siddhartha later became Lord Buddha, Prince Rahula became one of his disciples. He was only seven years old when he became a bhikkhu. Rahula Hamuduruwo was a very attentive student and was always eager to hear words of knowledge from his teacher. His character teaches us that we should always listen to our teachers and our elders. We must take advice from them and shape our character according to the good habits they teach us.

Do you watch any cartoons, Sohalee?

Yes, of course. My favourite among all the cartoons is ‘Frozen’ and my favourite character is Elsa.

When did you start playing the violin?

I started to learn how to play the violin a couple of years ago. First, it was difficult for me to hold the violin because it was quite heavy for my little hands. I am used to it now and I am good at playing simple tunes using it. I go to classes with a private teacher and I practise every week.

If you get the chance, would you like to play another musical instrument?

I would love to learn to play the melodica. After I learn that, I will think about learning to play another instrument.

Do you also train your voice for singing?

Yes. I do. But I am not going to a private class. I train my voice at home.

Have you taken part in any concerts?

I have taken part in concerts at school and at the nursery. I never got to play music at a concert. So far, I have only taken part in dancing items.

Do you play any sports?

I have not enrolled in any sports at school yet. But, in my preschool, we used to play many games. Last year at the sports meet, I came first in the running event. I received a trophy and a medal.

I wish to go to swimming practices in the future. I love to learn how to swim. I hope I will be able to go swimming very soon.

What is your ambition?

I want to become a teacher. I don’t know what I am going to teach, yet. But I love to go to school and teach as my class teacher does. She is very good with all of us and I would love to become someone like her in the future.

I also want to become a great musician in the future. I want to be able to play the violin every day.

Is there anyone you want to thank?

I want to thank my parents and my grandparents for always supporting me. I want to thank all my teachers and my friends in school.
