They only want JVP in interim Government to legitimise it: Anura Kumara Dissanayake

  • AKD claims an interim Govt. would have destructive and corrupt figures
At the main Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) May Day rally held in Colombo yesterday (1), JVP Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake said that Parliamentarians only want the JVP in an interim Government to add legitimacy to it. “Some people have asked us to join an interim Government with ‘them’. I asked them whom they are referring to by ‘them’? They said it would be under the President, with Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa in the second level and someone old from their group heading it,” he claimed. “This is the kind of interim rule they are proposing. I told them that the JVP has only three seats. So why don’t the other 222 form an interim Government together? I questioned why we were needed. Then they said that if the JVP does not join the interim Government, there will be no legitimacy to the interim rule.  “What does that mean? This means that they are ugly, smelly, destructive, and corrupt; but with us joining, they can add some colour to it. We told them that to even think about an interim rule, Gotabaya must go home.” Noting the dire economic situation of the country at the moment, Dissanyake stressed that the “person responsible for the disaster – former Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) Governor Ajith Nivaard Cabraal – must be sent to jail”.  “Economists repeatedly told him to change his economic policies and people marched on the streets demanding change. But Cabraal did not listen. Cabraal did not live up to his responsibility. For this, we will send him to jail. We guarantee it,” claimed Dissanayake. Dissanayake added that while the JVP, including himself, have been talking about this “corrupt ring of thieves” for a long time, they were ignored and insulted with such remarks as “he has a black mole on his face”. “The entire country is an agitation site – the correct political leadership and responsibility is needed from us at this point. On this historic May Day, everybody – from our party to academics to thinkers to activists – has a huge responsibility. These are rare opportunities; these will not come every year. This is a special moment in the country,” said Dissnayake, acknowledging the ongoing people’s struggles at the moment, around the island.  “Mahinda was referred to as the labourers’ leader. In 1970, he was the youngest MP to enter Parliament. Now, he has spent 52 years in Parliament. Is it not enough now? In all these 52 years, Mahinda has most likely spoken at every May Day rally. But where is he today? Which May Day Rally is he addressing today? What has happened to him today? “He has to listen to pirith in his Temple Trees bunker today. We all grow old, we all have different lifestyles according to age. When we grow old, we have to play with grandkids and reminisce about the old days. But Mahinda is still trying to rule the country. Forget ruling the country, he cannot even step onto the road today. He is in a bunker today,” said Dissanayake. Furthermore, Dissanayke added that the President is also hiding in a bunker at the moment. “Recently, army troops were brought from Anuradhapura and Special Task Force (STF) troops were brought from Dambulla to Colombo. Why is this? Because the President cannot step onto the road today, he cannot face the public today. Where is ‘Gama Samaga Pilisandarak’ today?” questioned Dissanayake. The JVP organised four May Day Rallies, titled the “Aragalaya’s May Day”, in Jaffna, Anuradhapura, Matara, and Colombo yesterday.
