Thomas’ College (STC) won the 29th Dr. R. L. Hayman Trophy, beating arch rivals Royal College with an aggregate score of 37 points to 17. Thomians secured a 20-point goal difference against Royal College after scoring 23 and 14 goals in the first and the second legs of the encounter respectively. Royal College won the title two times in a row, but they were clearly outplayed, scoring only 10 and seven goals in the first and the second legs respectively.
Thomas’ College captain Dirhean Dias was named the Most Valuable Player of the encounter for his exceptional performances throughout. He scored five goals in the first leg as well as two goals in the final game for his school. Dias was awarded the Royal College Group of 92 Challenge Trophy.
In the first quarter, only Royal scored a goal through Mihin Wanigasekara. Thomian captain Dirhean Dias leveled the score early in the quarter. Migara Gurusinghe scored the second goal for STC, and got them in the lead.
Banuka Jayathilake scored the second goal for Royal, levelling the score, and he added another to put Royal College back in the lead. Seconds before the break, Yumal Bollegala got STC back on level terms.
Banuka Jayathilake scored the opening goal in the third quarter to put Royal College in the lead. Thomian skipper Dias scored the fourth goal while Aaquil Zuhair scored the fifth goal for his team. Few moments later, Yasandu De Silva responded with the fifth goal for Royal.
Three more goals from Chariya Kurukulasuriya, Zuhair helped S. Thomas take a healthy lead in the third quarter.
The Thomians dominated the fourth quarter adding three quick goals from Kurukulasuriya, Santhush Kalansooriya, and Bollegala.
Royal only managed two goals in the final quarter from skipper Umindu Katugampala and Yamith Jayakody.
Thomians added three more goals towards the latter part of the quarter through Kurukulasuriya, Bollegala and Aaquil Zuhair.
The Under-15 encounter for the Mahinda Liyanage Challenge Trophy was won by Royal College. Royal College won the first leg 12-10. The young Thomians came back on the second leg winning it 11-10. However, the aggregate score was in favour of Royal College 22-21.
