Three records broken in Asiad swimming finals

Jakarta, 23 August – Swimmers from Japan and China set new records during the finals at the GBK Aquatic Stadium, Jakarta, on Thursday evening.

The first record was broken by Japanese athlete Satomi Suzuki in the women’s 50-meter breaststroke event with a time of 30.83 seconds. She beat her own record of 31.02 seconds, which she had set in the preliminary round.

With her new record, the 2012 Olympics silver medalist collected her second gold for Japan. She previously won gold in the women’s 100-meter breaststroke.

Another record was set by China’s Wang Jianjiahe, who clocked in at 8 minutes and 18.55 seconds in the women’s 800 meters freestyle. Wang’s performance was 5 seconds faster than the previous record of 8 minutes and 23.55 seconds set by China’s Li Xuanxu in the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou, China.

Her record-breaking performance gave Wang her second gold after previously emerging victorious in the 1,500-meter women’s freestyle final.

Wang’s gold medals bring China’s swimming medal tally to16 gold medals, strengthening the country’s top position in the Games’ medal tally with a total of 55 gold medals, 40 silver medals and 21 bronze medals.

The third record was set by the Japanese quartet that secured the gold medal in the 4×100 meter women’s relay.

Natsumi Sakai, Satomi Suzuki, Rikako Ikee and Tomomi Aoki set a new record of 3 minutes and 54.73 seconds, smashing the previous record of 3 minutes and 57.80 seconds set by China’s team in the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games.
