Turmeric import ban continues

26 Aug 2020

By Skandha Gunasekara  The ban on turmeric imports is to continue, with the Government confident of a sustainable harvest within a few months. Cabinet Spokesman Minister Keheliya Rambukwella told The Morning that the import ban would be maintained. “It’s very unlikely the ban will be lifted. But I believe the domestic harvest will have a good yield within the next three months. Turmeric as well as saffron is being cultivated at a large scale.” Furthermore, he said action would have to be taken to curb illegal turmeric imports entering the country. “We have to take proactive steps to curb the illegal turmeric coming in from other countries.”
