Two athletes miss events at World Junior’s due to ticket delay

03 Aug 2022

Tharushi Karunarathne and Hirusha Hashen missed their opening events in the World Athletics U20 Championships due to the authorities’ delay in procuring  air tickets for them. The Championships kicked off on Monday (1) in Cali, Colombia. Of the seven Sri Lankan athletes who were supposed to reach the event before the start date, three Sri Lankan athletes were set to compete on Day One. Tharushi Karunarathne, Hirusha Hashen, and Kaweesha Bandara were supposed to take part in the preliminary rounds of the Women’s 800 m, Men’s Long Jump, and Men’s 110 m Hurdles, respectively.  However, both Karunarathne and Hashen were unable to leave with the first set of athletes. In addition to the delayed departure, their flight was further delayed by two more hours, which meant that Karunarathne missed her 800 m event, while Hashen missed his long jump event.  While Karunarathne has another event coming up, the Women’s 400 m, for Hashen, participating in the Championships turned out to be a nightmare after being stranded at Torrington for a whole night, followed by close to 50 hours of air travel. Meanwhile, hurdler Kaweesha Bandara clocked 14.18 seconds and finished sixth in the heats of the 110 m hurdles, after making it straight to the race after touching down in Cali.  Two more Sri Lankan athletes were scheduled to compete yesterday (2). Tharushi Karunarathne and Amesha Hettiarachchi were scheduled to participate in Women’s 400 m and 400 m Hurdles heats, respectively.
