Two nabbed over tusker Bharana’s death

BY Buwanajee Coralage Two suspects have been arrested over the death of the elephant Bharana, whose carcass was found by the Galkiriyagama Wildlife Conservation officers in the National Namal Uyana forest reserve on early 26 July, said Department of Wildlife Conservation (DWC) Publicity Officer Hasini Harischandra. Speaking to The Morning yesterday (4), she said that the DWC is currently searching for another suspect, who was revealed to be a Police Constable (PC). The DWC and its regional office in Kurunegala are currently searching for this suspect as part of the investigations that are underway into the death of the said tusker. “The carcass of the tusker was found by our officers on 26 July and we have been successful in arresting two suspects involved in the death. However, we are still searching for another suspect, a PC who was also involved in this incident,” said Harischandra. The case has been reported to the Kekirawa Magistrate and the suspects have been revealed to be residents from the same locality. Multiple Police officials from the region refused to comment on the matter when contacted.
