11 Oct 2022

Urban Development and Housing Minister Prasanna Ranatunga has advised the Urban Development Authority (UDA) to continue implementing settlement projects in Colombo and its suburbs for low-income families, despite the ongoing economic crisis, while also recommending the adoption of alternative methods to procure the necessary funds without burdening the exchequer. Further, the construction of 5,500 housing units has also been proposed to be funded with loan support from the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank.  Ranatunga said that the construction work on 4,074 apartment units is still underway, while housing projects for low-income families and artistes are to be implemented through the utilisation of Chinese Yuan (CNY) 552 million to be received as a grant from China. The Minister further elaborated that 2,000 housing units are to be built in the Peliyagoda, Moratuwa, Dematagoda, Maharagama, and Kottawa areas. Ranatunga also said that priority will be given to the implementation of housing projects and settlements for low-income families in partnership with the public and private sectors and under the Government’s programme of selling houses belonging to the UDA, with funds received as a result of selling houses to be utilised for housing construction projects.
