People did not remove me, the UNP did: Rehan Jayawickreme

16 Jun 2021

The United National Party has issued a notice to be published as a Gazette to remove Rehan Jayawickreme from his post as the Chairman of the Weligama Urban Council, Jayawickrama stated on his Twitter account today (16). The notice published on Monday (14), has been sent to the Government printers by the Elections Commission and will be published as a Gazette shortly. Responding to this decision, Rehan Jayawickreme stated, "Positions and power mean very little to me. Purely because both are temporary and given by none other than the people. The people haven't removed me. It's the United National Party that did." "The love I have for this country and its people from all races and religions is what makes me motivated to do better. Sometimes I feel like giving up but then I realize that this is the career I chose and whatever obstacles I face will gear me up for better things," he stated on his Twitter account. Jayawickreme addressed UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe, stating that the future will be the judge of him and his actions. "The past has already judged you by giving you the worst electoral defeat you have ever faced in your life. Your time as being one of most conniving and self centered leaders to ever exist is coming to a fast end but surprisingly I hold no ill feelings towards you. The hatred has now vanished and I hold nothing but sympathy for you. "Sympathy for the Devil" I guess," he said. Jayawickreme said that once the gazette is published, he shall cease to hold his position, but that he would return. "I am happy, not because of anything else but the fact that I was never tainted with corruption or malpractice during my tenure. I always discharged my duties faithfully and honestly," he concluded.
