UNP speaks out against Cabraal's appointment

28 Oct 2021

Appointing a State Minister without the swearing into Parliament is against the law, says United National Party (UNP) member Sudath Jayasundera. He made this statement during a press conference held today (28). "The appointment of Ajith Nivard Cabraal is illegal. It is against the law. He came to Parliament through the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) national list, was made a state minister, then moved to the Central Bank, and now he holds both portfolios. This is illegal in all levels. He was never elected for by the people, yet he gets all these positions. No one can decide on such things by using influence. The Government has become a joke," said Jayasundera. He went on to say that Cabraal was once the witness for the Bond Scam, but now, with his appointment as the Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL), all witnesses have been lost. "With the power vested in Cabraal, he is no longer answerable to anyone. He is the CBSL Governor, he is a Parliamentarian," concluded Jayasundera. Additionally, Jayasundera said that on behalf of the UNP, he would like to voice out that decisions as such which are made by the Government are unfair and the UNP condemns such acts.
