USA’s CDC adds SL to ‘Level 4: Very High Level of COVID-19’ travel risk list

08 Sep 2021

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the United States of America has added Sri Lanka to its ‘Level 4: Very High Level of COVID-19’ travel risk list. Accordingly, it advises travellers to avoid visiting Sri Lanka. In the event a person must travel to Sri Lanka, the CDC recommends that they be fully vaccinated. “Because of the current situation in Sri Lanka, even fully vaccinated travelers may be at risk for getting and spreading COVID-19 variants. Travelers should follow recommendations or requirements in Sri Lanka, including wearing a mask and staying 6 feet apart from others,” the CDC warns. This classification of Sri Lanka as a very high risk Covid-19 zone comes in the midst of the authorities trying to revive the country’s dwindling tourism industry in order to bring in much needed foreign exchange.
