Violating election laws: Hundreds in custody

By Sarah Hannan As of midnight yesterday (6), a total of 121 suspects had been arrested in various police divisions across the country for violating election laws, the Police Media Division informed. “Out of the 121 in custody, two are candidates while the rest of them are supporters of political groups. A total of 96 complaints have been recorded, out of which 76 are relating to instances of violating election laws. A total of 32 vehicles have been seized during the period as well,” Police Media Spokesperson SSP Jaliya Senaratne told The Morning. He added that on Sunday (5), two pre-election campaigning-related complaints were received, with one person arrested and one state-owned vehicle seized whilst being used for election-related activities.
