VoA delayed by a week

23 Aug 2020

By Skandha Gunasekara The tabling of the Vote on Account (VoA), which was scheduled to be tabled in Parliament on Friday (21), has been delayed by one week and is to be taken up for debate this Thursday (27), The Sunday Morning learnt. The VoA, while not being included in Friday’s Order Paper, had been included in the Order Book after sittings had concluded. Parliamentary sources said that subsequently the VoA will be sent to all MPs to scrutinise before it is tabled and taken up for debate on Thursday (27). Minister of Mass Media and Cabinet Spokesman Keheliya Rambukwella said that party leaders may have had to postpone the tabling to finalise the allocations. “It wasn’t tabled on Friday, but I’m sure they’ll table it on Thursday and take it up for debate on the same day. They may have been discussing the final aspects of the VoA,” he said. He said the VoA was mainly for recurrent expenditure. “There are four months of recurrent expenditure for the year, so a bulk of the allocations will be for that purpose.” A two-day debate on the VoA is to be held on 27 and 28 August. It is set to allocate around Rs. 1 trillion for various expenses.
