Warrant on Shashi Weerawansa

Colombo Chief Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne yesterday (21) issued an arrest warrant on Shashi Weerawansa in relation to the case filed over the alleged forging of documents by her to obtain passports.

Shashi Weerawansa is the wife of National Freedom Front (NFF) Leader and Minister Wimal Weerawansa.

According to reports, Shashi Weerawansa’s counsel had informed the court that she was unable to attend court sessions since she was unwell, but had failed to present a medical certificate to court.

She is accused of fraudulently obtaining two passports, including a diplomatic passport, by submitting forged documents to the Department of Immigration and Emigration.

She was arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in February 2015 over the case and was later released on bail.
The case is to be taken up again on 18 August.
