Water Board evaluating costs

21 Aug 2022

The National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB) is currently evaluating the guidelines given by the Ministry of Water Supply on the proposed changes to the water tariffs, with the process still in its early stages, The Sunday Morning learns. According to sources at the NWSDB, the agency is studying the guidelines which the Ministry has given it, following the green light for a tariff change by the Cabinet earlier this month. “The NWSDB is currently analysing the costs and preparing estimates so as to revise the water tariffs in parallel to the recent revisions of fuel and electricity tariffs,” sources said, adding that in parallel to the costs of electricity and fuel prices, there has also been a marked increase in the costs of all chemicals used by the utility to purify water. “In addition, the cost of maintenance and operations has increased as well,” the source said. Meanwhile, Water Supply Minister Keheliya Rambukwella said Cabinet approval had been given to revise the tariffs and the Ministry had given the NWSDB guidelines to implement the revision.   Cabinet approval was granted to revise the tariffs to ensure the financial stability of the NWSDB. Attempts to contact NWSDB Chairman and GM regarding the tariff revisions failed.  – By Maheesha Mudugamuwa
