Weather fury: total affected over 12k

A total of 12,289 persons belonging to 3,307 families have been affected due to the inclement weather conditions in all parts of the country, since Monday (1), according to the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) as of 6 a.m. yesterday (3), while three persons have died and another four have gone missing due to inclement weather-related incidents. A total of three deaths due to inclement weather conditions has been reported from the Ambagamuwa Divisional Secretariat (DS) Division in the Nuwara Eliya District. The three deaths have been caused by cutting failures and flooding. According to the DMC, a total of 12,289 persons belonging to 3,307 families, in 21 DS Divisions in six districts, namely Jaffna, Nuwara Eliya, Kandy, Matale, Galle, and Hambantota have been affected due to the inclement weather conditions. Among them are five persons belonging to one family in the Jaffna District, 1,224 persons belonging to 330 families in the Nuwara Eliya District, 3,809 persons belonging to 837 families in the Kandy District, 20 persons belonging to five families in the Matale District, eight persons belonging to two families in the Galle District, and 23 persons belonging to six families in the Hambantota District. A total of 2,374 persons belonging to 485 families out of the affected are staying at 15 safe centres islandwide. Furthermore, one incident of complete property damage and 326 incidents of partial property damage have also been reported. Meanwhile, the National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) has issued landslides warnings for a total of eight districts, given the rainfall exceeding 75 mm in many of the areas yesterday (3). Accordingly, the NBRO had issued level three (red) landslide warnings to the Walasmulla DS Division in the Hambantota District, the Aranayake and Yatiyantota DS Divisions in the Kegalle District, the Pasgoda DS Division in the Matara District, the Ambagamuwa and Kotmale DS Divisions in the Nuwara Eliya District, and the Imbulpe, Kahawatta, Kalawana, Nivithigala and Kuruwita DS Divisions in the Ratnapura District. Level two (amber) landslide warnings have been issued to the Ganga Ihala Korale and Meda Dumbara DS Divisions in the Kandy District, the Ukuwela DS Division in the Matale District, and the Ratnapura, Pelmadulla, Eheliyagoda and Elapatha DS Divisions in the Ratnapura District. In addition, the NBRO has issued level one (yellow) landslide warnings for the Nagoda DS Division in the Galle District, the Doluwa, Udapalatha, Udunuwara, Pasbage Korale and Delthota DS Divisions in the Kandy District, the Dehiowita and Deraniyagala DS Divisions in the Kegalle District, the Athuraliya and Mulatiyana DS Divisions in the Matara District, the Nuwara Eliya DS Division in the Nuwara Eliya District, and the Balangoda DS Division in the Ratnapura District. During the landslides early warning period, the NBRO advised the public to pay attention to the development of cracks on the ground and ground subsidence, the slanting of trees, cracks appearing in the floors and walls of buildings which are built at slopes, and the sudden appearance of springs and emerging muddy water.
