Welikada Prison massacre case: 3rd accused acquitted

The third accused in the Welikada Prison massacre, Prison Intelligence Officer Imaduwage Indika Sampath, has been acquitted and released from the indictments. The decision was announced by the Permanent High Court Trial-at-Bar when the case was taken up today. IP Neomal Rangajeewa and Former Prisons Commission Emil Ranjan Lamahewa are the first and second accused in the case respectively. Indictments were served by the Attorney General in July last year. The Court further decided that it will resume the evidence examination against the first and second accused on 30th June.
The Welikada Prison riot took place in 2012 and left 27 prisoners dead.
