The Welisara Naval Base has been given the green light to reopen and begin functions once again, The Morning learnt.

Ministry of Health Epidemiology Unit Chief Epidemiologist Dr. Sudath Samaraweera told The Morning that the camp could reopen sometime this week.

“The Director General of Health Services has approved the reopening of the Welisara Navy Camp after it was closed off due to the Covid-19 outbreak. It can open sometime next week,” Dr. Samaraweera said.

He said that everyone in the Navy camp had been cleared of Covid-19.

“All within the camp have been tested and the reports were negative,” he said.

The Welisara Naval Base was put under quarantine after a Navy officer tested positive for the coronavirus.

Subsequently, all those at the Navy camp were also put under quarantine.
