BY Buddhika Samaraweera Colombo High Court Judge Navaratne Marasinghe yesterday (18) ordered to call the case against former Minister and incumbent MP Wimal Weerawansa – for allegedly illegally earning more than Rs. 75 million in assets and money beyond his legal income while serving as a Minister – on 13 September for a pre-trial conference. When the case was called before the court on an earlier occasion, the accused declared himself innocent of all charges after the prosecution read out the indictment to the accused. The Commission to Investigate into Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) had filed this case against Weerawansa, alleging that he has illegally earned more than Rs. 75 million in assets and money in excess of his legal income while serving as a Minister from 1 January 2010 to 31 December 2014. Indictments were served on 11 January 2018 against then-MP Weerawansa over the alleged unlawful earnings of money and assets when he was in the Government during 2010-2014, when he was also a Minister. Afterwards, the court ordered to release the accused on two personal bails each valued at Rs. 500,000.
