BY Dinitha Rathnayake  The Women and Child Development, Preschools and Primary Education, School Infrastructure and Education Services State Minister Piyal Nishantha De Silva criticized Opposition Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) politician Hirunika Premachandra's recent protest on the rising cost of living claiming that she had not responded to the problems faced by females during the tenure of the former United National Front (UNF) led Government of which she was a member of. Speaking to The Morning, De Silva claimed that Premachandra who is the SJB’s women’s wing the Samagi Vanitha Balawegaya (SVB) National Organizer, had no intention of helping females but had only sought to gain publicity. “Premachandra didn't do anything for females when she was in the UNF led Government other than talking about men.” The SVB led by Premachandra, recently staged a protest with regard to the rising cost of living and called for solutions to a number of problems, including the shortage of essential goods. The protest started near the Mirihana junction, and later, the group also went near the President’s house and protested. Premachandra stated that about 40 to 50 people had engaged in a protest opposite her residence after the SVB engaged in their protest. Attempts to contact Premachandra proved futile. Meanwhile, De Silva, remarking about the International Women’s Day, said that the Government's focus is to develop a female centric economy while empowering females across the country. De Silva added that the Government is celebrating the said Day for a period of one month till 07 April. The main celebration would take place at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall today (08) and tomorrow (09). “We have organized several programmes to empower females women throughout this month whereas last year it was just one week. The programmes concern the rights of women, the future of children and many others.”  He also said that the Government would get international help to empower females in society.
