Won't be long before we join in the struggle with the people: Dayasiri

29 Jun 2022

It won't be long before we join in the struggle with the people who are protesting and we might join the protests as well because this government is refusing to listen to the people of the nation and we are not in agreement of the clauses made to the 20th Amendment, says Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) General Secretary Dayasiri Jayasekara. He made this statement while speaking to the media today (29). "We had several concerns raised about the 20th amendment and the clauses within that amendment. There was an amendment where it states within the 21st amendment, the President has all rights to dismiss the Prime Minister from his title, whereas this is not there in the new 20th amendment. This is not what the people of the nation asked for and we believe the 20th amendment is actually just a change to the 21st amendment, and we must focus on a revision of the 19th amendment," says Jayasekara. He further noted that the SLFP, as a party, has decided to take the matter to courts and bring upon a change to the 21st amendment, and ensure that the amendments made along with clauses will pave the way for a democratic state. "We are thankful to MP Wijeydasa Rajapaksa for including 8 clauses to the 21st amendment, which we had suggested as a party. We all must unite as this is not the time to be pointing fingers and blaming, instead we must stand together in this journey," he concluded.
