Workplace injury compensation increased to Rs. 2 Million

The maximum amount of compensation to be provided to workers in the event of workplace injury has been increased from Rs. 550,000 to Rs. 2 million, as decided by the Parliamentary Consultative Committee of the Ministry of Labour. The Committee, at its meeting held on Wednesday (23), had decided to table the Workers’ Compensation (Amendment) Act in Parliament for its second reading to increase the benefits to employees who are affected by accidents while on the job. The officials also stated that several amendments will be made under this amendment, including increasing the surcharges levied on late payment of compensation from 10% to 30%. Several annual reports of the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment and the Employees Provident Fund were also reviewed at the meeting. Minister of Labour Nimal Siripala de Silva, and State Minister of Foreign Employment Promotion and Market Diversification Piyankara Jayaratne presided over the committee’s meeting.
