Zoo animals to get food thanks to Rs. 20 mn from Treasury

26 Jun 2022

  • Danger of starvation due to economic crisis averted temporarily
By Buddhika Samaraweera   Following the Department of Zoology informing the Wildlife Ministry a few weeks ago that it had run out of funds to feed the animals it houses, the Treasury has agreed to provide Rs. 20 million for this purpose for the next five months. This was following a request made by Minister of Wildlife and Forest Resources Conservation Mahinda Amaraweera from the Treasury. Claiming that there was a shortage of funds to feed the animals at the Dehiwala Zoo, Amaraweera said that the court had also assigned the zoo the responsibility of maintaining a large number of elephants that have been designated as case items, and that a large sum of money is therefore needed to provide food for the animals. “With the prevailing economic crisis, the money allocated in the last Budget to provide food to the animals at the zoo was coming to an end. Due to the decrease in the number of local and foreign visitors to the zoo, the daily income had also come down. That is why I requested the Treasury to provide financial provisions to feed the animals for the next five months of this year. Accordingly, the Treasury has agreed to provide Rs. 20 million for this purpose,” he said.  Meanwhile, the issue of obtaining fuel for vehicles to transport food for animals has also been discussed during a meeting between Amaraweera and officials of the National Zoological Department last Friday (24), following which the Minister has had a telephone discussion with the Chairman of the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) and taken action to arrange a programme to supply fuel for such vehicles.  He has also instructed to take steps to resume the animal exchange programme which was halted due to the Covid-19 pandemic. He said that although there was a need to obtain some exotic animals at the zoo at present, arrangements have not yet been made for that due to the non-implementation of the animal exchange programme.
